Guide to Tokyo

You’ve traveled through Paris and New York, so now it’s off to Tokyo, Japan! The levels start to get a bit challenging so you’re going to have to use your crushing skills to beat each level. Be sure to complete levels multiple times to restore the beautiful Wonders of Tokyo.

Tokyo, Small Village Turned Metropolis

Starting as a small fishing village named Edo, Tokyo grew into the largest metropolis in the world. Now, if you’ve ever seen any movies or read anything about Tokyo, you’ll know that it is rich in history and culture. Did you know that Japan has the oldest monarchy which dates back to about 660 BC!

Fun Facts

  • Tokyo has more Michelin-starred restaurants than any other city in the world. This possibly means Fennec loves this city above all others!
  • Another interesting tidbit that would please Fennec is the fact that there is one vending machine for every 23 people in the city of Tokyo. There is absolutely no reason for anyone to go hungry there.
  • The unofficial national flower of Tokyo is none other than cherry blossom.
    • Although the true national flower is the chrysanthemum.

Trekking Through Tokyo

Many levels in Tokyo are still simple enough to complete without too much hassle, but there are going to be some that require some thought on your part. There’s a brand new Obstacle, the Ticking Bomb which will end the level if you’re not careful. But, don’t let that stop you from visiting all of the interesting sights in Tokyo.

Helpful Tip: It’s becoming more important to take a moment to look over the board before you start to crush tiles. There are tricky spots to maneuver and the Ticking Bombs require some planning on how to remove them.

Ticking Bombs and other Obstacles are mentioned in the Blockers of Travel Crush Part 1. This guide will help with some strategies to help remove the obstacles stopping you from completing a level successfully.

Detour with Locals, Tokyo Edition

Just like the two cities before, there will be a special level following most levels that end in 5. The Detour with Locals will test your skills at crushing tiles and removing blockers so you can drop the Souvenirs to the bottom of the board.

All of the Locals in Tokyo are familiar faces, but they each have their Tripstagram content for your viewing pleasure.

TIP: Like and share Tripstagram posts as you go, so you can get the free rewards every 8 hours!

These are the friendly locals you will see in Tokyo:

Locals
Tokyo Locals need your help!
Pepper, the Chef
  • Find out where you should go to eat when in Japan and learn about the amazing food they have to offer. There are places where you can find food as beautiful as a work of art.
Coach, the Athlete
  • Discover the sports of Japan and see why they were picked to be the host of the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Pepsi, the Pop Star
  • The Pop-culture of Japan is showcased in Pepsi’s Tripstagram where you’ll find some interesting places to visit.
Henri, the Artiste
  • The history of Japan goes back a long time, so it’s no surprise that there is a wide variety of art to be found. Henri will show you some beautiful exhibits, and there is even one post about a digital art museum!
Haute, the Fashionista
  • From street fashion to traditional wear, Japan has a bit of everything. Is cosplay your thing? You will find that there, too!
Fauna, the Naturalist
  • Check out the Tripstagram post about the mystery of Rabbit Island. If you like bunnies, you’re sure to love learning about the place where they all roam free. Check out some of the other inspiring nature content, as well.

Wonders of Tokyo

Tokyo Wonder
The Tokyo Tower – RESTORED!

Just like the past two cities in Travel Crush, the Wonders are unlocked at every 10th level. These levels are just a bit trickier than average, and just like Detour with Locals, you’ll need to clear the way for the Souvenirs to drop to the bottom of the board.

HINT: As mentioned in the 10 Tips to Starting Travel Crush, the bottom of the board may not always be at the bottom of the screen. Portals might take the tiles and Souvenirs for a ride and end up somewhere else on the board.

These are the Wonders of Tokyo

210 – Tokyo Tower
  • A communications and observation tower, Tokyo Tower is one of the tallest buildings in Japan. However, it’s far more interesting than a boring antenna in the sky. The tower is lit up in different colors for special events and there was even a One Piece indoor theme park set up in Tokyo Tower!
220 – Gundam Robot
  • Based on mecha in a work of fiction, the Gundam Robot is a 59ft (18m) tall functional robot in Tokyo.
230 – Takeshita Street
  • Do you like shopping? How about food? Are you amazed by cosplay? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, Takeshita Street is the place for you. As one of the busiest shopping streets in Tokyo, you’ll have fun and leave with some bargains as well as a full belly.
240 – Hachiko Statue
  • In honor of the most loyal dog in Japan, the Hachiko statue is an unofficial landmark in Tokyo. If you haven’t watched the movie Hachi: A Dog’s Tale, you should add that to your list. Just be sure you have a supply of tissues on hand.
250 – Akihabara Anime District
  • You will find more than just anime here, there is plenty of electronics shopping and displays to be found here. Because of that, it also has the nickname Akihabara Electric Town.
260 – Tokyo Dome
  • You’ll find Coach, the Athlete here in the Tokyo Dome watching the Yomiuri Giants baseball team. Although you can catch other performances and sports events taking place here.
270 – Japanese Gardens
  • From bamboo to cherry blossom trees, there is a lot of natural beauty in Tokyo. Stroll through one of the Japanese Gardens and you might see Fauna, the Naturalist, and some of her friends.
280 – Chureito Pagoda
  • Don’t let the trek dissuade you from climbing almost 400 steps to get to the Chureito Pagoda, because once you reach the top you will be amazed at the unobstructed view of Mount Fuji.
290 – Flavors of Tokyo
  • Take the time to read through these Tripstagram posts to learn a bit more about what makes Tokyo unique.
300 – Mount Fuji
  • Even though the last time Mount Fuji erupted was in 1707, it is still considered an active volcano. It is a symbol of Japan and is the tallest mountain you will find in that country.

What Will You Find in the City of Tokyo Levels?

Even though there is only 1 new Obstacle in Tokyo levels, don’t let that fool you into thinking there aren’t going to be any other challenges. Not only is there an improvement on a previously released Obstacle, but there are also a lot more Obstacles to be found in Tokyo than there have been in the last two cities.

Get crushing!

Ticking Bomb
Ticking Bomb
Tick Tick BOOM
  • Just like the regular tiles on the board, Ticking Bombs can be removed by matching with the same colored tiles (or other Ticking Bombs) or by hitting them with a Power-up.
  • Don’t neglect these explosive bombs on the board, since when they go BOOM, your time is up! Pay close attention to the number
Locked Chain
Locked Chains
Break the locks and then the chains
  • A superior form of Chains and Double Chains, the Locked Chain needs to be broken 3 times before it’s removed from the board. Hopefully, you’ve mastered your lock picking skills.
  • To break Chains, you need to match them with tiles of the same color that is locked inside. Otherwise, a nice Power-up will do the trick.

Sayonara, Tokyo!

Tokyo Quote

As you’ve traveled through the roaring metropolitan of Tokyo, you’ve seen gorgeous landmarks and met some amazing people. Even if you’ve beaten all 100 levels, you can still go back and redo them for the Silver and Gold Stars to get those Wonders restored.

Now, let’s continue on to the next stop: Moscow.  See you there!
